MELSADENT
Whitening is a procedure that removes discoloration formed within the structure of the teeth. It is one of the most commonly used aesthetic dentistry treatments. As a result of whitening, teeth become temporarily brighter in cases of color changes caused by tea, coffee, smoking, or natural aging over time.
Over time, due to changes in the mineral structure of the teeth, the enamel layer becomes more porous. This creates a suitable environment for pigmentation, causing teeth to darken. Additionally, tea, coffee, smoking, tetracycline-type antibiotics, and excessive fluoride intake can also lead to discoloration. Teeth whitening is the process of eliminating these color changes within the tooth structure.
What Are the Teeth Whitening Methods?
Office Bleaching;
Performed by a dentist in the clinic and usually takes about 40–50 minutes. The gums are covered with a special protective layer, and a gel-type whitening agent is applied to the teeth.
Home Bleaching;
A transparent tray covering all teeth is prepared based on impressions taken from the patient. The patient places the whitening gel provided by the dentist into the tray and applies it daily for specific periods. Whitening gels may irritate the gums, so care must be taken to avoid overflow. If gel contacts the gums, it should be removed with a wet cotton pad.
Important Considerations
Temporary hot–cold sensitivity may rarely occur after whitening, but it disappears completely within 1–3 days. Whitening does not cause any damage to tooth enamel. A custom tray is prepared based on the patient’s teeth, and the whitening gel is applied at home using this tray. It is designed to fit comfortably without affecting daily life. With this method, long-lasting whitening can be achieved by dedicating about 30 minutes per day, usually over a few weeks.
Professional teeth whitening is a low-risk procedure. About 95% of applications produce successful results lasting 2–3 years depending on habits. In rare cases, sensitivity or gum irritation may occur but resolves quickly. Fluoride treatments and recommended toothpaste help reduce sensitivity.
The whitening outcome depends on tooth structure and stain type. Yellow stains usually whiten faster than gray stains. Porcelain crowns, veneers, and dentures cannot be whitened. The type of stain, strength of whitening agent, duration, and frequency all affect the results. The goal is not pure white teeth, but a shade that harmonizes naturally with skin tone, hair, and eye color.
