Wireless Orthodontics (Invisalign® Clear Aligners)

Orthodontic treatment corrects crowded teeth and jaw misalignment, improving not only aesthetics but also preventing potential gum disease and jaw joint (TMJ) problems in the future. It enhances chewing efficiency and can significantly improve speech disorders. In short, orthodontic care focuses on optimizing aesthetics, function (chewing), and phonation (speech).

Crowded teeth are more difficult to clean properly. Malocclusions (improper bite relationships) caused by jaw discrepancies or alignment issues may lead to enamel wear, chewing difficulties, and excessive pressure on the supporting bone and gums. If left untreated, these problems may require more complex and costly treatments later on.

What Causes Orthodontic Problems?

1- Genetic factors: Family history plays a major role, especially in skeletal discrepancies. Inherited conditions may include missing or extra teeth, narrow upper jaw, open bite, deep bite, crowding, spacing issues, protruding or retruded jaws. Early dental and orthodontic check-ups during childhood are essential.

2- Lack of preventive dental care: Untreated baby teeth due to the misconception that they will “eventually fall out” may lead to early tooth loss. As a result, permanent teeth may erupt improperly, causing crowding or impaction.

3- ENT-related problems: Chronic tonsillitis, enlarged adenoids, nasal obstruction, and mouth breathing may negatively affect jaw development and tooth eruption patterns.

4- Harmful habits: Thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier or bottle use, tongue thrusting, lip biting, nail biting, pencil chewing, and infantile swallowing patterns can all contribute to orthodontic irregularities.

Is There an Age Limit for Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment can be successfully performed at any age if the issue is dental rather than skeletal. Age mainly influences the speed of tooth movement and treatment duration. Adult orthodontics is increasingly common today.

However, if a skeletal discrepancy exists, timing becomes crucial. During growth and development, functional and orthopedic approaches can guide jaw growth effectively. After growth completion, skeletal problems may require a combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical approach.

Types of Orthodontic Treatments

Orthodontic treatment includes various techniques depending on the specific condition:

  • Removable appliances
  • Functional or orthopedic appliances
  • Fixed appliances (braces)
  • Clear aligner systems (Invisalign®)

1. Removable Appliances: Suitable for mild crowding and space issues, these appliances can be removed by the patient and are often used in early orthodontic treatment starting around age 8.

2. Functional / Orthopedic Appliances: Used to correct jaw growth discrepancies during childhood and adolescence by guiding or restricting jaw development.

3. Fixed Orthodontic Treatment (Braces): The most common method, involving brackets bonded to the teeth and connected with archwires to gradually move teeth into proper alignment.

4. Clear Aligner Orthodontics (Invisalign®): Invisalign® is a digitally planned, virtually invisible orthodontic treatment using custom-made removable aligners. After digital or conventional impressions are taken, aligners are produced according to a precise computerized treatment plan. They should be worn 18–20 hours per day for optimal results. Invisalign® is the world’s first clear aligner brand and has treated over 8 million patients globally, with numbers increasing every year. In Turkey, Invisalign® certification is granted exclusively to orthodontic specialists.
